About Libraries
A library, in general terms, is a collection of source and resources that is structured in a way that allows easy access to it. Commonly however, the library is the term used to describe a collection of books and the place where comprehensive collections can be found and borrowed. Libraries are commonly used by students or scholars as their main resource center when writing an academic paper, but this is only one of the senses that the term got along the time. For instance, in certain fields such as computer science or mathematics, the term is used to describe a collection of materials that are useful for the field and which may be access by everyone.
Libraries, in the traditional sense, are places where one can find extensive collections of books and can borrow them. Some people cannot afford buying the books they intend to read and others choose not to. Some people choose going to the library instead of buying their own collection because there are certain services that librarians can offer and which are greatly appreciated by the reader. Librarians become experts at finding source, as well as organizing and interpreting information needs. Nevertheless, libraries are for some the perfect environment for studying because they maintain a silent atmosphere in which people with the same interest gather, that interest being books.
Nowadays, libraries offer more services than simple books, one can get in the possession of maps, documents, audio tapes, CDs, DVDs and even video games or audio and visual materials that one did not have access to in a library some decades ago. This change in the way libraries work has been obviously brought about by the technological progress and the change in which people share information. Not to mention that most modern libraries are connected to internet and this has made them the places where individuals can get unrestricted access to information. This is a natural development in a society where information is everything.
Libraries work on constantly increasing their collection and keeping their old collections up to date. It is estimated that the library with the highest number of registered borrowed books per individual is Finland. In the US it is estimated that an increase in the number of borrowings was registered in the 1856-1978 period, while, from 1978 to 2004 a decrease of nearly 50% was registered. This is thought to be the result of the increased circulation of the audiovisual information that is nowadays more and more accessible to the public elsewhere, outside the library.
In the end, the library is for some a sacred place where they can learn more about the world. This information will be used in life later on, when one expects least.
